CHENNAI: Colourful flags fluttering high at the Soka Ikeda College campus at Madhanangkuppam signalled celebrations of the college's fourth graduation day. The college ground was filled with 200 undergraduate students eagerly waiting for the memorable moment when the degree would be conferred on them. M. Sathyamani, of the 2006-07 batch, bagged the best outgoing student award. Fourteen more students were presented with awards for proficiency in academics and other extra curricular activities. The occasion on Monday was all the more special as veteran poet Krishna Srinivas was awarded an honorary doctorate from Soka University, Japan. The 95-year-old poet has published several poems in the monthly magazine, run by the World Poetry Society, for the past 58 years. Akash K. Ouchi, Indian representative of Soka Gakkai International, Japan, presented the honorary doctorate to Mr. Srinivas. Felicitating Mr. Srinivas, S. Lakshmi, former vice-chancellor of Mother Teresa Women's University, said his poems could be prescribed for graduates' curriculum. Doris Hunter, interim minister, U.S.A, in her convocation address, highlighted the need of practising non-violence. Citing extensively from Bharathiyar's works, P. Marudhamuthu, vice-chancellor, Madurai Kamaraj University, said women's education was vital for their empowerment and the nation's progress. He advised the students to cultivate the habit of reading to acquire knowledge beyond classrooms. At present, the college has about 600 students studying in undergraduate and postgraduate courses in various streams. The seventh college day was also celebrated on the same day. Howard E. Hunter, emeritus professor of comparative rights, Tufts University, Massachusetts, U.S.A., college chairman Sethu Kumanan and principal P. Ranjitha Kani participated.
