Medical dictionary in two languages released

Staff Reporter

  • Deals with facts about human anatomy, medical inventions, sample diet charts
  • A section provides meaning for about 20,000 medical abbreviations

CHENNAI: A medical dictionary translated from English to two languages — Tamil and Telugu — was released at the Vijaya Health Centre on Thursday.

Compiled by D. Rambabu, it has been translated along with V.V. Rathnasree. The dictionary launch came as a surprise to the audience as neither of the authors were medical professionals.

Launching the book published by Srivari Publications, K. Meer Mustafa Hussain, vice chancellor, Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University, lauded the efforts of Mr. Rambabu, who put in three and a half years of work to bridge the gap between doctors' medical language and patients' lack of comprehension.

He said the book would be made available in the University library. Mr. Rambabu, general manager (finance and administration), Vijaya Health Centre, has compiled the dictionary along with doctors in the hospital.

Thiagavalli Kirupakaran, Director of Medical Education-incharge, who received the first copy, said it would facilitate better understanding of medical terms by patients in their mother tongue.

IIT Madras registrar Usha Titus underlined the various features of the book. Packed with 1,116 pages of information, the dictionary, divided into six parts, dealt with topics such as facts about the human anatomy, medical inventions and sample diet charts. The section that provided the meaning for about 20,000 medical abbreviations was commendable, she said.

Ms. Titus suggested that names of reference books and websites could be included.

    K. Radhakrishnan, Inspector General of Police, Law and Order, North Chennai, and P. Ramana Reddy, trustee, Vijaya Group of Hospitals, also spoke. For details about the dictionary priced at Rs.750, contact Srivari Publications at 2376 0605.
