CHENNAI: Sanskrit departments should be started in all universities, and the teaching of the language should not be confined to Sanskrit institutions alone, the former Union Minister and Rajya Sabha member, Karan Singh, said on Saturday. The corpus of ancient texts in Sanskrit was greater than that of any other language in the world, but the teaching of the language should be more broad-based, he said at the valedictory function of the Madras Sanskrit College centenary celebrations organised by the Sri V. Krishnaswami Iyer Sanskrit Education Trust. Sanskrit literature covered all aspects of life. It was the only pan-Indian language, besides English, that bound the country together. Both Sanskrit and Tamil were the great classical languages and the mothers of other Indian languages. Sanskrit had flourished, thanks to the service rendered by institutions such as the Madras Sanskrit College, which had created thousands of scholars over 100, he said. Mr. Singh also gave away the Veda Bhushana award to E.V. Parasurama Ganapathigal, the Kalavikasini award to Vidya Shankar, the Prachinatattvachintamani award to Irawatham Mahadevan and the Samuhasevamani award to C.S. Veeraraghavan. N.V. Devi Prasad, principal of the college; C.S. Sundaram, chairman of the managing committee of the college; B. Madhavan, secretary of the organising trust; and Prema Pandurang, founder of the Kshetropasana Trust, Sriperumbudur, participated.
