CHENNAI: The collective demand to stop child labour took various forms music, laughter and some `kolattam' here on Saturday evening. A collaborative effort between Hand in Hand Tamilnadu (HiH) and the Rotary Club, the `Global Walk Against Child Labour' saw several hundred citizens, students and volunteers march from the Labour Statue to the Light House. M. Kutralingam, School Education Secretary, and A. Sukumaran, Commissioner of Labour, Government of Tamil Nadu, flagged off the rally. A State-level meet on `Abolition of Child Labour and Right to Education' was organised with the participation of various groups to create a coalition against child labour and awareness of laws and their enforcement. Representatives of the Labour and Education departments, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), the Hotel Owners Association, the Lorry Owners Association, trade unions, self-help groups and non-governmental organisations participated. A book `Childhood Regained' by Neera Burra, Special Adviser, UNDP, was released at the event. Uma Maheshwari, Director of Elementary Education, and Shantha Sinha, director, M.V. Foundation, spoke. HiH credits M.V. Foundation with helping form its community-centric approach to wiping out child labour, a method that involves mobilising various sections in the village communities it works in against child labour.
