Budget session from February 23 to May 22

NEW DELHI: The budget session of Parliament begins on February 23 and will go on till May 22 with a 27-day recess from March 22 to April 17.

This recommendation was sent to the President on Saturday, after the Cabinet Committee of Political Affairs finalised the schedule on Friday evening. It will be the longest-ever budget session with 42 sittings against an average of 35.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Priyaranjan Dasmunsi said that before sending the recommendation to the President, he had consulted the presiding officers of the two Houses. While Rajya Sabha Chairman Bhairon Singh Shekhawat was consulted last week, Mr. Dasmunsi met Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee on Saturday morning.

The session would begin on February 23 with the President's address to both Houses, after which they would adjourn to condole the death of sitting members. The Railway Budget would be presented on February 26, the Economic Survey on February 27 and the General Budget on February 28.

Respecting the wish of the members and the desire expressed by the Speaker, the Government decided to extend the session to 42 sittings to facilitate greater debate. "This is rare and unprecedented," the Minister said.
