`Build houses for the displaced'

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh Girijan Samakhya has condemned the demolition of hutments of poor Girijans near Ramanthapur tank and demanded construction of pucca houses to the victims in the same place.

Samakhya State secretary R. Shankar Naik, who visited the area on Saturday, assailed the Uppal Kalan Municipality officials for demolishing the huts of Girijans who had been living in the Government land for the last 30 years. The hutment dwellers had been paying municipal tax and their names were in the voters' list, he said.

The Government, which had promised to work for the welfare of the poor and promised them house sites, had not even given 60 sq.yards to the poor and now rendered them homeless.

Favouring rich

On the other hand, it had been liberal in handing over thousands of acres to the rich and capitalists, Mr. Naik alleged and threatened to launch an agitation for construction of pucca houses for the displaced Girijans.
