DYFI plans march to railway office

KOCHI : The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) will stage a march to the office of the Area Manager of Southern Railway on February 5 in protest against the proposed bifurcation of the Palakkad Railway Division. The march will begin from the Cochin Shipyard premises. CPI(M) State committee member K. Chandran Pillai, MP, will inaugurate the protest. A release said here on Saturday that the Centre had neglected various demands raised by the State. The Union Government had not sanctioned a request for introducing a railway zone in the State. The bifurcation of the division would affect the interests of the people here, the release said. — Staff Reporter

Loco staff flay

`excess duty'

KOCHI : The All-India Loco Running Staff Association has come out against the `excess duty' that loco staff are forced to do. In a press release here on Saturday, K.C. James, southern region general secretary, said that station masters, loco pilots, trackmen and gatekeepers at level-crossings are facing health problems because of excessive work strain. The agreements that working hours of loco pilots would be restricted to 10 hours had not been implemented, he said. — Staff Reporter

Gandhian centre

KOCHI: Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit will start a Centre for Gandhian Studies on its main campus in Kalady. A Syndicate meeting held on Saturday decided to start the centre, as per the recommendations included in the Tenth Plan document of University Grants Commission (UGC). The commission will provide the funds for setting up the centre. - Staff Reporter
