Around the City

Life term for murdering friend

New Delhi: A city court has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for killing his friend over a petty dispute more than three years ago. Additional Sessions Judge Vinod Kumar also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on Gurmukh Singh, a `sewadar (volunteer)' in the Gurudwara Raqab Ganj, holding him guilty of murdering taxi driver Jaspal Singh.

The court relied on the original statements of two eyewitnesses, Ashok Bannerjee and Swarn Singh, who had turned hostile, holding that they seemed to have been won over by the defence as their testimonies were corroborated by other evidence.

Gangsters involved

in auto-theft held

NEW DELHI: An alleged inter-State criminal and two of his accomplices said to be involved in over 60 cases of auto-theft and robbery have been arrested by the Crime Branch of Delhi police.

Twelve cars, two motorcycles and several air-conditioners, refrigerators and colour televisions have been recovered at their instance, the police said.

Acting on a tip-off, a trap was laid near Bakkarwala village in Nangloi and the accused, Manoj Bakkarwala, was arrested.

Later, two of his accomplices -- Sandeep and Dharmender Singh -- were also arrested.

During interrogation, Manoj purportedly confessed to having stolen over 35 vehicles from the Capital and neighbouring States. He was earlier arrested in 2003 by the Delhi Crime Branch and later again by the Special Cell.

Heroin seized,

one held

New Delhi: The Police on Saturday seized over 1.2 kg of heroin worth over Rs one crore in the international market and arrested one person in this connection in North Delhi.

Mohd Younus, a resident of Ghaziabad, was nabbed in Wazirabad area when he was allegedly waiting to deliver the consignment to somebody, the police said.

Around 1.25 kg of heroin was seized from the 24-year-old, who told police that he had procured the contraband from Barabanki in Uttar Pradesh.

Suicide bid by

bank executive

NEW DELHI: A 27-year-old senior executive with a private bank allegedly tried to kill himself using a service rifle of a security guard at Roop Nagar in North Delhi over the weekend.

The police said Harmeet Singh, who was employed at the Roop Nagar branch of HDFC Bank, asked the security guard to fetch some refreshments for him after the bank staff had left late on Friday evening. Singh also directed the guard to leave his rifle behind with him. He then allegedly shot himself in the stomach with the rifle.

When the guard returned, he found Singh lying in a pool of blood. Singh was taken to Bara Hindu Rao Hospital. He was operated upon there but his condition continues to be critical. A native of Chandigarh, he is a resident of Dwarka in Delhi.
