HIV incidence "low among pregnant women"

Special Correspondent

TIRUVANNAMALAI: The incidence of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) among pregnant women had been found to be low in Tiruvannamalai district, and with more awareness, the incidence could be further brought down, according to I. Maria Yesuraja, Project Manager, Tamil Nadu State AIDS Control Society (TANSACS), Tiruvannamalai district.

Speaking at an AIDS awareness camp for women organised jointly by the Field Publicity Office, Government of India and the Sadayanodai Ilaignar Narpani Manram (SINAM), an NGO here on Friday, Mr. Yesuraja said that among the 18,169 pregnant women who were tested for HIV in 2006, only 64 women were found to harbour the virus, constituting just 0.35 per cent. Among the 12,200 persons who voluntarily subjected themselves for HIV test at the Integrated Counselling and Testing Centres, only 464 had HIV.

Mr. Yesuraja urged the theatre owners to compulsory screen the slides on AIDS awareness. He said that TANSACS would take steps to dispel the wrong notions on the use of condoms and increase its use.

T. Sivakumar, Field Publicity Officer presided. Rama Perumal, Director, SINAM, welcomed. P. Sekar, programme coordinator, proposed a vote of thanks. Around 100 women participated in the camp.
