Judge concerned over degeneration of values

Special Correspondent

"Lawyers should be devoted to community, court, client, colleagues"

Puducherry: Judge of the Madras High Court Justice V. Ramasubramanian expressed concern over the fast degeneration of values in almost all professions.

He was presenting the first memorial lecturer on "Ethics in Legal Profession" after inaugurating the "Advocate Shri R. Padmanabhan Memorial Charitable Trust" formed by the advocates who were juniors under Padmanabhan here on Sunday.

Quoting from various authorities on the need to maintain ethics in one's profession, Mr. Ramasubramanian said that the lawyers should be devoted to their profession.

"Unscrupulous success would not last long and there should be no attempt to withhold information either from the courts or from the clients reposing faith and trust in the lawyers while seeking their legal services," he added.

Referring to the provisions contained in the Advocates Act on various do's and don'ts, he said that advocates could cultivate the virtues of being true and devoted to the community, the court, client and to their colleagues.

He also urged the lawyers to keep leading and eminent professionals as their role models and remember always that the clients were entitled to get sincere and honest attention and service.

The Judge distributed cash award to students of Government Law College in recognition of their proficiency in their studies from out of the Trust funds. He also handed law books to advocates in the Union Territory.

Chief Judge of Puducherry M. Chinnapandi welcomed the formation of the Trust for a noble cause in memory of the late advocate Padmanabhan by his juniors.

Public Prosecutor T. Murugesan recalled nostalgically his association with Padmanabhan. District Judge and Member Secretary of Legal Services Authority of Puducherry D. Ramabathiran, president of Bar Association of Puducherry C.T. Ramesh and advocates R. Usha and M. Joseph Vincent also spoke.
