TIRUCHI : The current status of bioresource, impact of natural calamities, and anthropogenic activities on homeostatic, diversity of bioresource and approaches in bioresource management were the discussion topics at a recent four-day international conference on `Biotechnological approaches in bioresource management' organised by the Department of Biotechnology, Bharathidasan University. The aim of the conference was to foster the Bioresource management and further development to conserve, protect and manage various ecosystems, including their pristine bioresource, according to the conference convener, S. Sivaramakrishnan. With the whole biosphere facing a number of formidable environmental problems there is a need to increase an awareness of the imperative needs to protect and manage various ecosystem and their pristine natural resource. The conference, he said, explored the current status of development in the technology and recent advancements in the field of biodiversity of bioresource in the terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems for its protection, conservation and enhancement. The conference took stock of the disasters people were exposed to due to the extreme events in the Indian Ocean and the loss of natural coastal vegetation, lives and livelihoods of numerous coastal communities. The meet advocated creation of biowall or shelterbelt of trees and other vegetation since mangrove in backwaters may act as a defence.
