`Clear declaration of equality in Koran'

Staff Reporter

No basis in the argument that Islam does not allow freedom to women: activist

KOZHIKODE: There was no foundation in the alleged argument that Islam did not allow freedom to women, social activist and vice-president of Athouheed Dwa International Centre for Women's Studies, Mumbai, Shahanas Sheik has said.

Dr. Sheik was speaking after inaugurating the women students' meet organised in connection with the Islamic Students Conference at the Tagore Hall here on Saturday.

The Koran has not declared any tenet exclusively for men. The holy text has the same set of guidelines for men as well as women on matters relating to prayer rituals, fasting during the holy month and giving of charity. In the eyes of God all would be compensated equally too, she added.

This was a clear declaration of the equality of the sexes. Islam gave a prominent place to women and there are instances of women who were martyrs for the cause of the faith.

Salma Anwariya, State president, Muslim Girls Movement presided.

Lectures on different topics were delivered by Khadeeja Nargis, MGM general secretary Bushra Najathiyya, among others.

The Arabic conference conducted as part of the students meet was inaugurated by Mujib Rehman, professor of Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.

Inaugurating a seminar on `Sachar Commission report and future of minorities' Justice P.K. Shamsudin opined that a wrong notion was being projected that there were no eligible persons from the community to take up Government jobs and hence the poor representation of Muslims in the Government sector.

Another misrepresented fact was that the influx of the community to the Gulf was the reason for the low representation of members of the community in Government jobs.

The notion still prevailing was that only those from the higher castes were intelligent and eligible for Government jobs, it was alleged.

E.T. Mohammed Basheer former Education Minister, also spoke on the topic. M.I. Thangal was the moderator.

P.P. Sreedharanunni, poet, inaugurated the children's meet.
