Subbarayan's plea to Lalu Prasad

TIRUPUR: Coimbatore MP K. Subbarayan has appealed to operate radial shuttle services between Coimbatore and Tirupur, and from Tirupur to Erode considering the galloping growth registered in these industrial towns.

In a memorandum to Railway Minister Lalu Prasad, he pointed out that daily around 10,000 passengers commute in this sector and the number was increasing due to the growth in textile and hosiery sectors. Mr. Subbarayan urged the Railway Minister to restore the old timings of train number 6607 to reduce the hardship faced by the regular commuters from Erode to Tirupur.

He appealed to the Minister to expedite the gauge conversion between Coimbatore and Madurai. — Staff Reporter

Tsunami shelters gutted

KARAIKAL: More than a dozen tsunami temporary shelters at MGR Nagar here in the Union Territory of Puducherry were destroyed in a fire that broke out on Saturday. This is the fourth time that a fire destroys tsunami temporary shelters at MGR Nagar.

Fire tenders from Karaikal rushed and put out the fire. No casualty was reported and the cause of the fire is being investigated.

The total loss is estimated at Rs. three lakh. — Staff Reporter

Independence anniversary observed

CHENNAI: The 59th anniversary of Sri Lanka's independence was celebrated at the Sri Lanka Deputy High Commission here on Sunday.

P.M. Amza, Deputy High Commissioner for Sri Lanka in Southern India, hoisted the flag.

Arumugam Thondaman, Minister of Youth Empowerment and Socio-economic Development, was also present.

Mr. Amza recalled the contributions of the previous generations for freedom and said Sri Lankans had the responsibility to build a future worthy of them.

He said India had been supportive of the country's efforts in this direction and that Sri Lanka is committed to a pluralistic society where all communities can live in peace and harmony. — Staff Reporter

`Give subsidies for electronic meters'

CHENNAI: The State Government should grant subsidies for installing electronic meters in autorickshaws, the Auto Thozhilalar Sangam said in a release on Sunday.

In an appeal to the Government to review the recently announced autorickshaw fares, A.L. Manoharan, Sangam general secretary, said the Government should fix a minimum fare of Rs. 15 and an additional Rs. 7 for every kilometre thereof.

As transition to the new fare system was expensive, the card system should be extended.

The Government should once again convene a meeting of autorickshaw unions to deliberate on fare revisions, he added. — Special Correspondent

Sri Lankan Tamil MPs meet Vaiko

CHENNAI: A delegation of Sri Lankan Tamil Members of Parliament met MDMK general secretary Vaiko on Sunday and discussed the situation prevailing in the island nation, a release said.

Magazine released

Thanjavur : The Students' Biotechnology Association of Shanmugha Arts Science Technology and Research Academy University has released the second volume of NULCEO magazine on Friday. It was released by Prakash Vaschaspathy, research scientist, Astra Zeneca India Private Limited, Bangalore. The first copy was given to Dean, School of Chemical and Biotechnology, K.N. Somasekharan, and the second copy to Dean of Sponsored Research, S. Swaminathan.

Troupe wins prize

Thanjavur : A music troupe of South Zone Cultural Centre with 160 students from Palakad district of Kerala has won the first prize in the Republic Day cultural programmes held recently in New Delhi by performing a dance called `Kaniyar Kali.'

According to a press release issued here by A.C. Mohandoss, Director of the centre.

The prize was handed over to the Director by the Union Defence Minister, A.K. Antony, in New Delhi on January 29.

"Send handicrafts for national award"

Thanjavur : The Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation (Poompuhar) has appealed to craftspersons in Thanjavur district to send their handicrafts for the national award to be given to them by the Handicrafts Development Corporation.

A press release issued here by the Regional Manager of Poompuhar here said that applications for participating in the competition could be had from the Poompuhar show room here and regional offices in Chennai, Coimbatore, Thanjavur and Tirunelveli and also at the Head Office in Chennai.

Filled-in applications along with the beautiful handicrafts prepared by the craftspersons and a passport size photo of the artist should be sent to Chairman and Managing Director, Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation Limited, 759, Anna Salai, Chennai-600 002 on or before April 30, 2007.

Mettur level

TRUCHI : The level in the Mettur dam on Sunday stood at 84.54 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Sunday.

The inflow was 243 cusecs and the discharge from the dam was 2,000 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

Fire

ERODE: Fire broke out in one of the coal-laden wagons of a goods train proceeding to Pugalure from Chennai port on Sunday morning. Fire and Rescue Services personnel doused the fire, and the wagon was detached from the others. Railway officials said no major loss was reported. — Staff Reporter

Sports meet

ERODE: Vivekanandha Educational Institutions, Periyar University and Association of Indian University will together organise a nine-day All India and South West Zone Inter University Hand Ball tournament for women on the college premises from February 5, says a college release.

As many as 1,000 players are expected to participate in the event, which will be inaugurated by Namakkal Collector G. Sundaramoorty.

NAGERCOIL: A parish priest Retnaraj (52) of Pulluvilai near Thuckalay was killed when a van dashed against his motorcycle on Sunday.

Held for assault

NAGERCOIL: The police arrested two persons for allegedly assaulting the president of Tamil Muslim Munnetra Kazagham, Kader Mohideen, on Sunday. They said that Mr. Mohideen was speaking with his friends at Eraviputhurkadai near Thuckalay when some unidentified persons assaulted him.
