CHENNAI: The quality of rice distributed through the public distribution system under the Rs. two a kilo scheme was of poor quality and unfit for consumption by the public, AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa claimed on Sunday. Also, the price of essential commodities such as dal, groceries such as cooking oil and chilli powder and vegetables had gone up. As the rice bags were stored by the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation in open granaries, they were exposed to the elements, she said in a press release.
Give evidence: Minister
Responding to AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa's allegations that rice supplied under the Rs. two a kilo scheme was of poor quality, Food Minister A.V. Velu, on Sunday asked her to provide evidence in support of her allegations.
Overwhelming
response
The scheme had received overwhelming response from the public and had earned tremendous support for the Government. Ms. Jayalalithaa should provide facts and evidence on where such incidents occurred, Mr. Velu said.
