DMK to contest from 59 wards

Staff Reporter

It will field the same candidates who contested last elections

Chennai: The DMK will contest from 59 of the 100 Chennai Corporation Council wards, going to polls on February 18.

The party will field the same candidates who contested the local body elections last year, according to the list released by the DMK headquarters Anna Arivalayam on Saturday. However, ward 27 in which the DMK won the last election, has not been included in the list. Ward 71, where the party did not contest, has been added.

A large number of nominations were filed after the DMK made the official announcement on the candidates it was fielding. On Saturday, 91 candidates, including 26 DMK candidates, filed their nominations.

CPI(M) candidates

The CPI(M) has also named the candidates it will field. A release said the party would contest from eight wards. It would clash with the DMK in six wards. The CPI (M) and the DMK had fallen out before last year's Council elections. It is likely that a seat-sharing arrangement would be worked out this time. The Vijayakant-led DMDK has fielded candidates in 95 wards. It will directly face the DMK in 56 wards. The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee is yet to announce its candidates.

It is learnt that the All India Congress Committee has already directed TNCC to field the same set of candidates as last year.

The PMK has also not released names of its candidates.

With only two days left for candidates to enter the fray, a flood of nominations is expected on February 4 and 5.

The AIADMK and MDMK have not made any indication related to the fielding of their candidates.
