TIMELY RESCUE: A truck illegally transporting cattle to Kerala was intercepted by PfA activists at Red Hills on Sunday.
CHENNAI: Volunteers of People for Animals on Sunday intercepted a truck transporting cattle under inhuman conditions at Red Hills. The truck carrying buffaloes from Andhra Pradesh was on its way to Kerala via Pollachi when the PfA team intercepted the vehicle with the assistance of Kancheepuram DIG of Police S. S. Krishnamoorthy.
Injuries to animals
According to police, 27 young milch cattle were tethered neck to neck. The animals suffered bruises on the body and damage to the eyes during the ordeal of transportation. Some of them were also found to be pregnant and other suffering from fractures. There was no way the animals would have survived the 20-24 hour travel before they reached Kerala where they would have been slaughtered and sold as meat, volunteers said.
Complaint filed
A complaint was filed in Red Hills police station under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960, Transport of Animals Rules 1978 and IPC 428 and 429. The buffaloes were immediately brought to the PfA's Jaigopal Garodia Jinendra Animal Shelter and rendered first aid. According to a PfA activist, the illegal trade, seemed to be reviving of late.
Appeal for cooperation
The PfA has appealed for cooperation from the Government as well as police to put to end this illegal trade. The driver and the cleaner of the truck have been arrested, said police. The Red Hills police are investigating the case.
