Assembly polls in Uttarakhand and Manipur

NEW DELHI: The Samata Party (SP) has fielded 21 candidates in Uttarakhand and seven in Manipur for the Assembly elections.

The party has decided to back Prakash Singh Badal's Shiromani Akali Dal in Punjab and has not fielded any candidate in the State, the SP president Brahmanand Mandal said here on Saturday.

Mr. Mandal said convenor of the National Democratic Alliance George Fernandes was unlikely to campaign for the party in this phase. It may be recalled that recently Mr. Fernandes backed a move for the revival of the SP. The party is not part of the NDA.

Mr. Mandal also announced party positions for 16 members of the JD (U) who joined the party at a function on January 21 here.

Praveen Singh Jadeja, Irfanullah Khan and Shiv Kumar have been appointed national general secretaries of the party. Om Prakash Gurjar, Meena Rajput, Abhay Singh and Nipun Dhulua will be national secretaries. Newly appointed State presidents are Sailesh Mehta (Gujarat), Hukum Singh Kashyap (Rajasthan), Halim (Chattisgarh), Narsimha Reddy (Andhra Pradesh), Jadhav (Telangana), Amit Lamba (Haryana), Fateh Singh Chauhan (Dadar and Nagar Haveli), Anurag Kumar (Uttarakhand) and V. Bhaskaran (Tamil Nadu).
