Hosur: Frequent and unannounced power cuts have had a drastic effect on the small and tiny industries in and around Hosur. The power cuts, which on an average extend up to two to three hours a day, have largely resulted in affecting productivity in these units. As a result, majority of them have to install their own power captive generators that involve huge capital costs. In the last week itself, there were three to four power cuts daily, affecting the production badly, said industrialists. According to an industrialist, the worst affected are plastic and melting industries that require power continuously. It is said that a power cut for half an hour will end up in these units not only losing materials on process, but also take at least another hour or two to restart their production. So majority of the big units have resorted to alternative captive generation. Sources in Tamil Nadu Electricity Board said the power cuts were mainly due to tripping in the grid caused by a miss-match between generation and demand. Since such tripping could cause heavy damage to high voltage equipment, load shedding was being effected. With the power supplied by the board being relatively cheaper than the power produced by a generator, the industrialists urged the Government to provide uninterrupted power supply.
