Farmer ends life in Bijapur district

BIJAPUR: A farmer who found it difficult to clear the loans he had taken committed suicide at Inchgeri in Indi taluk of Bijapur district on Friday. The police gave the name of victim as Dhareppa Loni (60). Police said he hanged himself from a tree. The farmer had reportedly taken huge sums as loan from banks and moneylenders. — Staff Correspondent

Faculty appointed for Ayurvedic colleges

BANGALORE: The Ministry of Medical Education has appointed 59 faculty to the government Ayurvedic Colleges in Bangalore, Mysore and Bellary. A release from Medical Education Minister V.S. Acharya said that they had been appointed on contract based on merit and reservation. The posts had been lying vacant for several years, it added.

Counselling for headmasters

BANGALORE: The Department of Public Instruction will hold counselling for headmasters of government high schools who have appeared in the written test to qualify for the post of B.R.C. coordinators under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan.

A release said that the fifth round of counselling would be held on February 13 at the office of Commissioner of Public Instruction, Nrupatunga Road, Bangalore.

Nanjundaswamy hailed

HASSAN: Editor of Kannada daily Janata Madhyama R.P. Venkatesh Murthy said on Saturday that Nanjundaswamy, Sundaresh and Rudrappa were responsible for the farmers' movement in the State. He was speaking after releasing a book on Nanjundaswamy here. Mr. Murthy said that Nanjundaswamy followed secularism and opposed caste system. He had launched an agitation in favour of the implementation of the Havanur commission report. Presiding over the function, socialist leader Manjunatha Datta said Nanjundaswamy was a scholar.— Staff Correspondent

SI suspended

MYSORE: A sub-inspector attached to the City Crime Branch has been kept under suspension pending inquiry for allegedly helping a candidate to copy at the written test conducted for the posts of police sub-inspector in Mysore on Sunday. B.C. Mariswamy, who was an invigilator for the test at Maharani's Arts College, was allegedly found allowing a girl candidate to copy. The girl has also debarred, a press release from the police commissioner's office said. — Staff Correspondent

Employee dismissed

HUBLI: The Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation has dismissed from service an employee following his conviction in a corruption case in the District Sessions Court and the special court in Dharwad. P. Manivannan, Commissioner, HDMC, has given the name of the employee as S.B. Kotabagi, second division assistant. — Staff Correspondent

Services resume

DHARWAD: The services of the "Mobile library", which had been discontinued owing to repair work of the vehicle will resume from February 5. The services will be available in Dharwad from Monday to Wednesday and in Hubli from Thursday to Saturday. There will be no change in the usual route of the vehicle, a release said.

Calendar released

HUBLI: Revenue Minister Jagadish Shettar released the new calendar showcasing the places in twin cities of cultural, literary and tourist importance here on Saturday. Hubli-Dharwad Garden and Fruit-Flower Show Committee and Dharwad Zilla Khadi Gramodyoga Samsthe have jointly brought out the calendar. Journalist Patil Puttappa, photographer Shashi Sali A.G. Deshpande and others were present.

Showroom set up

HUBLI: Girias, the largest player in the State in consumer durables, has set up its eighth showroom in Karnataka and the tenth in the country in Hubli. Directors of "Girias Investment" Manish Giria and Rishab Giria told presspersons here on Sunday that the company plans to exceed a turnover of Rs. 430 crore in the current financial year. The 1,500-sq ft. fully air-conditioned showroom on Club Road in Hubli will have a display area of 6,000 sq ft. where products of major national and international brands would be on display. It would offer the same competitive prices offered at Bangalore, Mr. Manish said.

He said the company had set a target of Rs. 25 crore as turnover for the Hubli showroom in the first year. The formal inauguration of the showroom will be held on February 7. — Staff Correspondent

Funds for airport

PANAJI: Minister for Civil Aviation and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Praful Patel stated on Saturday that his Ministry would provide funds for expansion of the Dabolim airport in Goa. Mr. Patel, who is NCP's Party Observer for Goa, was addressing the NCP workers' convention in Vasco. He said the Dabolim airport would be opened for air traffic for 24 hours and this would help improve tourism and Goa's economy. Stating that the number of foreign tourists arriving in India was around 40 lakh, he said efforts should be made to increase this number by expanding infrastructure. — Special Correspondent

Officials warned

SIRSI: The district Lokayukta SP A.H. Savanur took officials to task for constructing a compound wall around Mundagod taluk panchayat at a cost of Rs. 4 lakh without inviting tenders or getting the required permission. He pointed out several irregularities in the implementation of the project and warned the officials concerned during a visit to Mundagod on Saturday. He paid a visit to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and BCM hostels. Earlier, he attended to grievances at the Circuit house.
