3,302 to get title deeds tomorrow

Staff Reporter

5,370 persons from Thiruvananthapuram applied for title deeds

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM : As many as 3,302 people, mostly Adivasis, will be given title deeds at a fair being organised by the district administration on February 6.

Title deeds would be given to 1,237 Adivasis and 1,117 fisherfolk at the fair, District Collector N. Ayyappan said at a press conference here on Sunday. As many as 5,370 persons from Thiruvananthapuram district had applied for `pattayam' since 2004.

Chief Minister V. S. Achuthanandan would inaugurate the fair at 4 p.m. Fifty counters would be opened at the fair, to be held at the Thankamma stadium at Peroorkada, to give away the title deeds. Twentyfour counters would be opened for the 1,843 applicants from the Neyyattinkara taluk. There are 845 applicants from the Nedumangad taluk, 410 from Thiruvananthapuram taluk and 194 from Chirayinkeezhu taluk. A maximum of five cents would be given to an applicant within the Corporation limits and 15 cents for an applicant in a panchayat area.

The district administration had readied 88 plots of land with houses at Nainankonam to be distributed among those belonging to the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes categories. Since the land identified for this purpose came under the category of `excess land', the Government's permission was required for handing over this land. If such permission was received, then these title deeds could be distributed on February 6 itself.

To a question, Mr. Ayyappan said the district administration had set up eight special teams to look into the complaints of land grabbing and possession of fake title deeds in the district. As part of the precautionary measures to face the oncoming season of drought, a decision would soon be taken not to provide water from the Kerala Water Authority for construction purposes.

Strict action would be taken against hotels/ commercial establishments/ apartment complexes found drawing water directly from the city's drinking water supply system using suction pumps.
