Bangalore: Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court Cyriac Joseph has said that he regrets the misunderstanding caused by his statement at an inaugural function in Mysore on Saturday. He reportedly asked Bar Associations and Bar Councils to observe "democratic values." Speaking on the role of advocates in strengthening democracy in the country, the Chief Justice had reportedly said that before criticising politicians and Parliament for the criminalisation of politics, Bar Associations and Bar Councils should set an example to others. They should avoid those involved in criminal complaints from being elected to lawyers' associations, he said. The statement was not against any particular Bar Association or Bar Council. It was with respect to a few individuals against whom specific complaints had been made, he said. Mr. Cyriac Joseph said he held the advocates and their elected bodies in high esteem, and that he did not intend any offence to their prestige and honour.
