Role-model This has reference to `Committed to teaching' (The Hindu 27/1). It is great that SG school teacher Srilatha has been spending one-third of her salary just for transport to attend her remote school in the thick forest area. The district administration must also be appreciated for recognising the services of this new teacher for awarding the best teacher award on the Republic Day. The sincerity, dedication, determination and devotion to her duty are unimaginable and worth appreciating by everyone. As most of the young and new recruits to the post of a teacher approach many politicians, MLAs and Ministers for a change of posting from remote forest areas, it is most astonishing that Srilatha has closed the doors for change of posting and decided to serve the children of the remote forest area with courage and by taking the help of an old man and a bullock cart. Her service is a role-model for other teachers, who rarely attend schools situated in remote places. The district administration should come forward to give the transport charges to this dedicated teacher to encourage her to attend school without any break. I request the District Education Officer and Collector of Adilabad to take initiative and encourage people like Srilatha by helping them in all aspects. J.P. Reddy, Nalgonda
This refers to the news item of the Congress' readiness for an international conference on Satyagraha (The Hindu, January 28, 2007). Gandhiji's contribution lies in extending the principle of Satyagraha from application merely to the narrow sphere of the individual to the much larger sphere of society. The individual, after all, never lives by himself but is always a member of society. Satyagraha is a non-violent fight.
A non-violent individual cannot tolerate inequality, exploitation or tyranny in his environment. Hence, Gandhiji's untiring insistence on truth and non-violence not only in individual life, but also in politics, economics and social relationships. His aims were not merely to reform the individual, but to help in establishing a righteous society, where love and goodwill would prevail.
The root of Satyagraha is in prayer. A Satyagrahi relies upon God for protection against the tyranny of brute force.
The weapon of Satyagraha is nothing but soul force. We are passing through a crisis in our history and danger has beset us on all sides.
But we shall convert it into our opportunity if we realise the power of Satyagraha, which is always superior to armed resistance.
M.Satyanarayana Rao,
