HYDERABAD: CPI (M) Polit Bureau member Sitaram Yechury has cautioned the Manmohan Singh Government against toeing the line of the US and its imperialist policies like the erstwhile NDA Government. Addressing a meeting to condole the hanging of Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein organised by United Citizen's Welfare Organisation here on Sunday evening, he rejected the suggestion of the Congress that the CPI (M) was trying to communalise the foreign policy. He said the line of approach of the CPI (M) was humanism and anti-imperialism. No country should decide or dictate to people of any country as to who should be their leader. But by doing so, the US had imposed its hegemony on the people of Iraq. "If at all anybody communalised the issue, it was US President George Bush. For, he invoked God before attacking Afghanistan and Iraq," Mr. Yechury said. Referring to the BJP's charge against the Left that the latter pursued vote-bank politics, the CPI (M) leader said the Left parties were opposed to American imperialism throughout. Quoting an observation by a Hindi newspaper, he said, `Vajpayee knelt down before the US'. He said the UPA Government should be wary of the imperialist policies of the US, particularly in respect of the nuclear deal. Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy, CPI MP, said if at all anybody had to be punished for perpetrating terror in the world, it was George Bush. "Saddam Hussein was a friend of India and remained so throughout," he added. CPI MP Azeez Pasha and Indo-Arab League representative Syed Vicaruddin also spoke.
