BHUBANESWAR: That more and more women are taking to politics in the rural areas of Orissa is clear. A total of 1,288 women are contesting for 841 Zilla Parishad seats in the ensuing three-tier polls in the State. A total of 3,597 candidates, including 1,288 women, are contesting for the Zilla Parishad Member posts for which elections are fought using party symbols. Of the 854 Zilla Parishad zones, 301 seats are reserved for women candidates. Of the seats reserved for women, 58 were for women belonging to Scheduled Castes, 85 were reserved for Scheduled Tribes, 88 for Other Backward Castes and 70 for those coming from general castes.
