Bangalore: You could call it a dog's day. For the canines it was a time to put their best `paw' forward.

Dogs of all shapes and sizes and varied breeds came together at the 84th and 85th All-India Championship Dog Shows organised by the Mysore Kennel Club here on Sunday. The club is affiliated to the Kennel Club of India. The event was inaugurated by City Police Commissioner N. Achuta Rao, who said, "It is a nice event and demonstrates our pet-loving nature."

As many as 414 entries were received for the show. "This year, some of the attractions are the Chihuahua, the smallest dog in the world, the Siberian Husky and the American Cocker Spaniel. Labradors and Pugs are the most popular dogs this year. One trend being noticed in the last few years is that there are fewer German Shepherds. Earlier, they used to be very popular but now their numbers are going down," B.C. Ramakrishna, president of the club said.

One of the high points was the presence of Karnataka's very own Mudhol Hound. According to Dr. Ramakrishna, the dogs are judged according to their coat, gait and temperament. Every breed of dog has a set standard for judging.

The results

In the 84th championship dog show, the "Best in Show" award went to a Bull Dog owned by Devaraj Santhosh Kumar. A Fox Hound owned by Raghunandan was judged second "Best in Show" while a German Shepherd dog owned by Kala Krishnan bagged the third "Best in Show" title.

The "Best in Show-Bred in India" award went to a Great Dane owned by Kalaivani, while the Bassett Hound owned by Jaimatt Henry was judged "Best Puppy" in the show.

In the 85th championship dog show, the dog adjudged "Best in Show" was a German Shepherd Dog owned by Harchan Singh and Abdullah Noori, while the second and third "Best in Show" awards went to a Saluki owned by Kalpana N. Shetty and a Doberman owned by Javinder Singh, respectively.

The "Best in Show-Bred in India" award was bagged by a Golden Retriever owned by Yashodhara Hemachandra while the "Best Puppy" award went to a Fox Terrier owned by V. Doraiswamy.
