CHENNAI: Value-based education helps in character building of children — this is the motto of Kasthuriba Club, a Children's Welfare Centre at Mylapore that has been moulding the younger generation into responsible citizens since 1949.

Participating in the Club's 57th anniversary celebrations on Sunday, T.S. Krishnamoorthy, former Chief Election Commissioner, said more such clubs were needed in every locality to build a better society.

He underlined few qualities imperative for the personality development of children. Besides devotion towards god, children must also develop tolerance and respect for another person's life. Being able to take decisions quickly was also essential in the competitive environment, Mr. Krishnamoorthy said.

He later distributed prizes to children who topped in various contests. About 150 children bagged prizes for winning in competitions on Tirukural and Tamil devotional literature such as Thirupavai held during December. Mr. Krishnamoorthy also released the club's souvenir.

Sharing her personal experiences, Uma Ramesh, educationist, said learning devotional literature in childhood helped her deal with problems in life.

The Club, which has about 100 members, conducts various such events, including oratorical contest and painting contest for skill development among children. Club president K.S. Bhatt also participated.
