ICRISAT's crop varieties popular in China

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Chinese farmers have found multiple uses for ICRISAT's pigeonpea varieties which were re-introduced there in 1999 after its cultivation disappeared from farmlands.

ICRISAT's Director-General William Dar said in a press release that the area under pigeonpea increased from 50 hectares in 1999 to 1,00,000 hectares in 2006. Apart from the increase in area, the farmers found diverse uses like prevention of soil erosion, crop diversification, fodder for cattle, feed for fishes, and preparation of food products.
