CHENNAI : Academic qualification has to be supplemented with soft skills such as communication skills and leadership skills in today's context, S. P. Thiagarajan, former Vice-Chancellor of University of Madras said on Sunday. He was addressing students at an event organised by Aims Education to present awards to toppers in the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) model examination conducted by them earlier this month. Professor Thiagarajan said the employability of students of arts and science colleges was about 40 per cent and that of students of engineering colleges was 60 per cent. The challenge was to make more students employable, he said. "While the Union Government has increased budgetary allocation to higher education, the target is to make quality education accessible to more students," he remarked, quoting the National Knowledge Commission's recommendation that India must have over 1000 universities. About 5,500 students took the model examination this year. P. V. Navaneethakrishnan, consultant, AIMS Education and former Director of Entrance Examinations in Anna University, said State Board students should take the AIEEE with confidence, as they were equipped to compete with CBSE counterparts. "In the absence of the TNPCEE this year, you can direct all your energy towards the AIEEE," he told students. Director of AIMS Education Gita Prabhu said detailed sessions on each subject were organised for students. A good score in the AIEEE ensured admission into reputed institutions, including National Institutes of Technology. Over 5 lakh students from all over India appeared for the AIEEE last year. N. R. Alamelu from Aarupadai Veedu Institute of Technology, the sponsoring college and S.Basker, general manager (operations) from Vinayaka Missions University were also present.
