Majestic Metro rail to chug on swanky lines

V. Geetanath

No ridership guarantees to prospective builder

  • 16.75 lakh riders likely for three routes
  • World class designs for stations, depots

HYDERABAD: The totally elevated Hyderabad Metro construction work to be launched by middle of the year will rise to the height of a third floor and will have swank stations connected with escalators and elevators.

Thirty of the 63 overhead stations across the three Metro rail routes will be built up to five floors on each side.

    All of seven floors

Three depots to be constructed at Miyapur, Falaknuma and Tarnaka will have up to seven floors on each side to exploit the plum commercial space for revenue generation.

The Rs. 8,760-crore project for the routes — Line 1: L.B. Nagar to Chaitanyapuri, Line 2: Jubilee bus station to Falaknuma and Line 3: Habsiguda to Madhapur — across 66 km will have two tracks (up and down lines) on a concrete beam built mostly on road median with the latest fastening devices.

Fourteen stations on Line 1, nine stations on Line 2 and 10 stations on Line 3 have been chosen for real estate development, making use of the `absolutely minimum required land' for stations, terminals and depots, says a note submitted to the Cabinet.

Project Director N.V.S. Reddy says that world class architectural designs will be worked out for the stations as well as depots.

    Simulated features

Each of the five bidders' consortia will have to submit simulated presentations of the designed train, features, movement and safety aspects.

Successful bidder among the five will develop real estate space of up to 200 acres in identified stations and depots from its own funds on a lease basis outside the project cost.

    No sale of property

The property cannot be sold but can only be rented out during the 35-year concession period, including five years for construction.

Later, the property will be reverted to the Government, explains Mr. Reddy, making it clear that the Government is not giving any ridership guarantees to the prospective builder.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, prime consultant for Hyderabad Metro, as per its traffic study has estimated the number of riders to be 16.75 lakhs per day for all the three routes of the Metro's first phase.
