Corporation not to dump waste at Brahmapuram

Staff Reporter

Division-level processing of waste to be undertaken

  • City divided into east and west zones for waste treatment
  • GCDA land at Mundamveli will be used for dumping segregated waste

KOCHI: The City Corporation has dropped the plans to dump municipal waste at Brahmapuram much to the relief of the residents of the area. The people of Brahmapuram were on a warpath after the Corporation drew up a proposal to use the land it had purchased at Brahmapuram for dumping waste. The Corporation move followed a directive from the Kerala High Court.

With the State Government stepping in for solving the garbage issue of the city and focus now shifting to division-level decentralised processing of waste, the Corporation dropped the idea of dumping waste at Brahmapuram, said E.M. Sunilkumar, chairman of the Town Planning Standing Committee of the Corporation.

The residents of Brahmapuram had dug deep trenches on the road leading to the site and posted people on guard to prevent the Corporation from dumping waste there.

A meeting attended by State Ministers and civic administrators on Monday took the decision to reduce the waste that comes to the general pool by processing them at division levels.

The city was divided into east and west zones for evolving strategies and implementing waste treatment projects.

The land owned by the Greater Cochin Development Authority at Mundamveli will be used for dumping segregated waste. The Corporation has decided to develop the land required for the plant on its own. The Corporation had earlier purchased 39 acre at Brahmapuram for the plant. Of this, the plant would come up on 7 acres.

    Green belt

The civic body has entrusted the Agri-horticulture Society with the task of developing a green belt around the site of the proposed waste treatment plant at Brahmapuram.

The society will plant 50,000 saplings around the project site for the green belt and the planting would be completed before March 1.

A committee has also been formed for the periodic review of the progress of the project, said Mr. Sunilkumar.

The committee has the District Collector as the convener and the Kochi Mayor as its chairperson.
