BANGALORE: The city police on Sunday took 130 persons into preventive custody to avoid any disturbance in the light of the final order of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal expected on Monday. According to Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Bipin Gopalakrishna, the persons taken into custody include those listed as "rowdies" and who have history of offences. He said the police stations have started the process of conducting peace committee meetings involving Kannada- and Tamil-speaking population. He said 18,000 policemen, which includes police from other parts of the State, have been deployed at various places in the city. Security arrangements have been made in the areas which bore the brunt of the violence in the Cauvery riots of 1991. A large number of policemen have also been deployed in areas where Tamil-speaking people are in a majority. The police will maintain a strict vigil and will use video camera to catch mischief mongers, he said. Meanwhile, State Secretary of AIADMK V.A. Pugazhendi has asked Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy to provide adequate protection to Tamil-speaking people and their property.
