Tank not cleaned for one year Sir, The Puttenahalli tank has not been cleaned in the past one year. The water is polluted and the stench has become a health hazard for the residents of Jaraganahalli and Ashta Lakshmi Layout. Garbage, plastic bags and carcass of dogs are being dumped into the tank. Industries nearby are discharging chemicals into it. A large number of fish were found dead due to suffocation last year. Periodic cleaning and regular police patrolling are necessary to ensure that garbage and chemical wastes are not dumped in the tank. S. Raja, Bangalore Shelter for stray dogs Sir, How can animal lovers consider that life on the city's streets is worthy of animals such as dogs? The right to live with dignity should apply as much to animals as to human beings. Animal rights organisations are sterilising and vaccinating dogs against rabies, and leaving them again on the streets. What are the dogs supposed to eat to survive? And what about the risk of them catching all kinds of disorders and skin diseases from eating filth and drinking polluted water? Even healthy stray dogs end up mangy, hairless, and vermin-ridden or crippled in traffic accidents. These indignities are no less cruel than the mass culling that the city corporation resorts to. Let the animal birth control programme be converted into an animal adoption programme. Kathyayini Chamaraj, Bangalore
Deplorable condition of road Sir, The condition of the road stretching from Nagarbhavi Circle in Ward No 39 to the Administrative Block of Bangalore University is deplorable. The fact that both Bangalore City Corporation (Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike) and the university are responsible for different stretches of this road is making it easier for both the organisations to pass the buck on the issue. The road is the only means of access to several key institutions such as the Sports Authority of India, the National Assessment and Accreditation Council, the National Law School of India University, the Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research, and Gandhi Bhavan. Though a part of the road is wholly within the university campus limits, it is being used by the general public to access Mysore Road from Chandra Layout. RTI applications to all these institutions to determine whether they are responsible for contributing towards maintenance work have drawn a blank. The agencies concerned should take up the issue at the earliest since there are not even streetlights along the stretch. Arun Sri Kumar, Bangalore Dedicated rail link to airport Sir, The authorities concerned are considering the possibility of introducing a high-speed dedicated rail link to the new international airport at Devanahalli. In fact, this should have been planned much earlier as per the norms prevailing at most of the airports overseas where the airport is linked to the city by a rail connection. This would make travel to and from the airport easier as it provides an alternative to the road link. D.B.N.
