NEW DELHI : Four suspected Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) militants, including a Pakistani, were arrested on Sunday after an encounter with the Delhi Police under the Ranjit Singh flyover near Connaught Place.

The police claimed to have recovered 3 kg of RDX, four detonators, a timer, six hand grenades, .30 bore firearm, $ 10,000 and Rs. 50,000 from them.

The Special Cell of the Delhi Police had received a tip-off that some JeM members were in the Capital to carry out a major operation and they would meet near the flyover on Sunday evening.

Subsequently, plainclothesmen took positions around the rendezvous point on Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Marg.

Around 9.15 p.m., they spotted three persons carrying hand-bags, while another was coming from the opposite direction.

    Exchange of fire

The police challenged the four and asked them to surrender. But one of them opened fire and they tried to flee. The Special Cell men returned the fire and surrounded the militants.

An exchange of fire followed and soon the four were overpowered. Bags containing the explosives, timers, detonators, hand-grenades and cash were seized from them.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Karnal Singh said the militants identified themselves as Shahid Gafur from Sialkot in Pakistan and Bashir Ahmed, Fayaz Lone and Abdul Mazid from Jammu and Kashmir.

The three Kashmiris purportedly disclosed that they arrived by the Malwa Express earlier in the day.

The terrorists were taken away to the Special Cell's Lodi Road office for further interrogation.

The police suspect that the terrorists were planning something big as evident from the recovery of the explosives and ammunition.
