This Day That Age
Dr. John Matthai, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bombay, has said that it is the function of the university to train and prepare the youth for the task of the coming years. Inaugurating the centenary celebrations of the University of Bombay, at the Lloyds Reclamation Ground, on February 4, he said it was the business of the universities not only to convey the true concept of democracy to their students, but also prepare them for the great transformation taking place in the country. "This ancient country is in the process of recovering its youth. Isolated for centuries from the rest of the world, it is now in the process of finding its rightful place in the family of nations. It is a transformation which is not confined to this country alone. It is taking place in many other countries too. It is important that our universities should be able to train and prepare the youth for facing the responsibilities involved in this process of transformation. They should give attention to it because this transformation is taking place at a time when, as never before, the destiny of man lies in his own hands."
