Krishnagiri: UNICEF has allotted Rs.8.88 lakh towards the purchase of science experiment kits and training of science teachers in all schools in Krishnagiri district under the Ariviyal Anandam programme (Science is Fun). Science teachers and resource persons from AID India, a voluntary organisation, would train science teachers and Block Resource Teachers (BRTs) in the blocks of Uthangkarai, Mathur, Bargur, Kaveripattinam, Veppanapalli, Hosur, Thally and Kelamangalam on the implementation of the Ariviyal Anandam programme, said Collector Santhosh Babu here on Monday. The first phase of the programme was initially launched in the blocks of Krishnagiri and Shoolagiri on November 27. Based on the feedback from teachers, BRTs and officials of the Education Department the programme has been extended to all blocks with support from UNICEF, he said. The Collector said that the programme was an opportunity to improve the scientific skills and instill scientific attitude among children. AID India has developed an experiment kit to help children do low cost scientific experiments. Within a short span of four months as many as two lakh children in Standards VII and VIII will learn to do 35 experiments based on scientific principles. The children will sit in groups and discuss the theories for the experiments. Teachers will conduct two sessions every week and at the end of four months, the children will demonstrate what they had learnt at exhibitions, Mr. Babu added. According to UNICEF District coordinator P. Ganesamoorthi the programme has created a lot of enthusiasm among children and science teachers in Krishnagiri and Shoolagiri blocks where it was implemented during the first phase. The main objective of the programme is to communicate the reality and excitement of science through simple science experiments. A resource team from AID India led by Balaji Sampath, Professor Ravishankar and Smitha Kalyani would train the teachers in respective schools. BRTs of Sarva Shiksha Abiyan would monitor the implementation of the programme.
