PANAJI: The fate of carnival, the annual four-day festival of fun, frolic and merrymaking, continues to hang in balance following the simmering controversy over organisation of the carnival float parades in Goa from February 17. The announcement by Tourism Minister and Deputy Chief Minister Wilfred de Souza that the parades this year would be organised by the Goa Tourism Development Corporation Limited (GTDC) has invited strong opposition from the city Mayors from all the four major cities. The municipal bodies have declined to allow the GTDC to run the show. Mayor of the Corporation of the City of Panaji Tony Rodrigues and that of Margao Municipal Council Rajendra Azgaonkar continued to be defiant and have declared that they would hold the Carnival in their cities, even if the State refuses to give grants.
