BMC polls

The editorial "Saffron rides again" (Feb. 3) on the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation election results underlines that it is the secular parties who are to blame for the NCP-Congress show. The failure of non-communal parties to forge a united front and the indifference of middle class voters, a nationwide phenomenon, led to Hindutva prevailing.

Unless the sleeping giant called the middle class wakes up, Indian democracy will receive a rude jolt in 2009. It is also time for secular parties to learn a lesson or two from the BMC elections.

The election of Adolf D'Souza, representing the Juhu Citizens Welfare Group, as a corporator should serve as an eye-opener. If the middle class, the people living in bungalows, and the intelligentsia decide to exercise their franchise there will be a massive power shift. Shabana Azmi and others deserve to be applauded for making the elite realise the need to cast their vote.

The victory of the Sena-BJP alliance can be attributed to the clear-cut and co-ordinated strategy of the combine. The results have come as a shock to the Congress and the NCP. Complacence, over-confidence and a gross underestimation of their opponents have led to their dismal showing.
