KOLLAM: Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran has said the State Government has decided to allocate Rs.33 lakh for the purpose of writing off loans availed by the families of those killed in the tsunami in the State. Talking to presspersons here on Monday after a review meeting of the tsunami rehabilitation programme, the Minister said the amount would be distributed to the beneficiaries by February 15. He said requests for waiver of loans from other victims of the tsunami would be scrutinised and deserving cases would be considered. The Minister said the projects under the Rs.1,441.75-tsunami rehabilitation programme for the nine coastal districts in the State would be cleared by a steering committee chaired by the Chief Minister. The projects should be completed by the end of 2009. Under the programme, houses for 17,000 families would be constructed. The land for the purpose would be acquired by March 31. The location of 5,000 houses and the beneficiaries had been identified. A sum of Rs.9 crore donated by the Maharashtra Government would be utilised for constructing 250 houses in the tsunami-devastated areas. Mahindra and Mahindra Limited will construct the houses. With an additional Rs.3 crore, also from Maharashtra, Karunagapally Taluk Hospital would be developed. The Minister promised to look into the allegation that banks were not cooperating with the tsunami rehabilitation.
