Belgaum: The plan for taking out a big procession on the opening day of the three-day Vishwa Kannada Sammelana here has been finalised. According to official sources here on Monday, the procession will comprise men, women, schoolchildren, college students, artistes, eminent personalities and activists of Kannada organisations from the city, district and other parts of the State.
Biggest contingent
The 5,000 activists from Kannada organisations would be the biggest contingent. An elephant carrying a portrait of Bhuvaneshwari Devi would lead the procession followed by at least 2,000 members of Stree Shakti groups in traditional attire, schoolchildren and Scouts and Guides. One hundred bullock carts with their riders in traditional north Karnataka dress, 300 bicycle riders (sponsored by Rotary Clubs) and 100 girl students belonging to BPL families who have benefited from the State Government's bicycle scheme would also be part of the procession.
Tableaux
Besides, 175 artistes from all over the State, 500 artistes from different folk troupes from Belgaum city and the taluks in the district would participate in it. That apart, there would be 27 tableaux, one from each district. These tableaux would highlight the progress achieved during the last five decades of the formation of the State. There would be another 10 tableaux exclusively from Belgaum district in the procession.
Funds
The Government, according to Minister for Social Welfare and chairman of the sub-committee for procession, Balachandra Jarkiholi, has provided Rs. 40 lakh for organising the procession. The committee was also considering sending invitations to all Ministers and legislators to participate in the procession. A final decision in this regard is yet to be taken.
