Puducherry
Special Correspondent
Puducherry: Director, Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), K.S.V.K. Subba Rao has said that there was every need to take care of the health of women and children in villages as human development indices depended largely on the promotion of nutrition and prevention of diseases among rural people. Inaugurating a five-day training programme in the JIPMER here on Monday, Mr. Rao said that the Centre had launched the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) to address the healthcare requirements of the people living in remote villages. The programme was organised by the Food and Nutrition Board (FNB) of the Union Women and Child Development Ministry to train officials of the Integrated Child's Development Scheme (ICDS). Lauding the efforts of the FNB for training the functionaries of anganwadi centres attached to the ICDS, he said that these personnel were in direct contact with the women and children and hence it was appropriate that they should be equipped with the skill to generate awareness of proper health care programmes. Despite the country having excellent infrastructure, expertise, doctors and nurses and para-medical staff, the fruits of high-tech medicines and latest gadgets were yet to be taken to rural areas. It was indeed a sorry state of affairs that a large number of women and children were dying due to malnutrition. He said that the functionaries of the ICDS project should therefore bring to notice of the vulnerable sections the need for taking right type of nutritious diet and the practice of right physical activity and adoption of a stress-free life. He said that the Centre was also promoting the team of "Accredited Social Health Activists" (ASHAS) as part of the NRHM. The Head of the Department of Preventive and Social Medicine in the JIPMER, M. Balasudarsanan, who presided, said that the training would be marked by lecturers as well as interaction with participants. He pointed out that any health care delivery system should be made available on time to the targeted sections. Director of Department of Pediatrics S. Srinivasan was also present. Professor of the Department of Preventive and Social Medicine Gautam Roy said that the fight against malnutrition involved a multi-sectoral and multi-departmental approach. Population stabilisation, increase in food production and improvement in socio-economic status of the people should be taken care of. Demonstration Officer of the FNB T. R. Rajendran and demonstrator A. Tirunavukkarasu also spoke.
