Illicit arrack seized

Dharmapuri: As many as 55 persons, including 32 women, involved in brewing illicit arrack were arrested by the Prohibition Enforcement Wing (PEW) police in the district on Monday.

Following instructions from Superintendent of Police H.M. Jayaram, a team conducted surprise raids in Dharmapuri, Adhiyamankottai, Karimangalam, Thoppur and Madikonpalayam and seized 3,000 litres of illicit arrack and 2,590 litres of fermented wash worth Rs.2 lakh.

Grant for renovation of houses

RAMANATHAPURAM: The Government has allotted Rs.22 lakh to renovate semi-permanent houses in the Mandapam camp for refugees. Special Deputy Collector, Mandapam camp, D. Ramachandran, told The Hindu that the gesture from the State Government followed requests from refugees to carry out repairs in the camp. Special Commissioner for Rehabilitation R. Karpoorasundara Pandian, who inspected the camp and met the refugees a few days ago, promised action on all genuine demands.

Mr. Ramachandran said, as of now, the condition of nearly 300 semi-permanent houses wasbad. Damaged tiles would be replaced with new tiles and damaged electricity equipment replaced. — Staff Reporter

Women's rally postponed

CHENNAI: The proposed rally by the women's wing of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) on February 10 here in support of 33 per cent reservation has been postponed, according to a release from the party's North and South Chennai District Secretaries.

The decision was taken in view of the Chennai Corporation polls.

The fresh date for the rally would be announced later, the release added. — Special Correspondent

The State Information Commission has moved to a new address at Kamadhenu Super Market (First Floor), Teyanampet (near Vanavil), old number 273, new number 378, Anna Salai, Chennai 600 018, and post box number 6405, a press release here said.The change in telephone numbers will be intimated later.

Youth drowns

ERODE: The police are on the look out for the body of an 18-year-old who drowned in the Cauvery river on Sunday.

According to the police, Sekar of Karungalpalayam, employed in a private textile shop, was bathing with three friends at Vairapalayam, when he was caught in a whirlpool.

ERODE: About 200 unemployed physical education trainees observed a one day token fast on Monday in front of Erode Municipal Office demanding that the government employ them as physical education teachers in middle schools in the State.

Further, the Government should fill all vacancies with the qualified trainees. — Staff Reporter

Opened

ERODE: Paddy procurement centres were opened at Kavindapady, Kanjikoil, Vellode, Kugalure, Kallipatty, Ukkaram, Muthur and Govindapuram on Monday, said Collector D. Karthikeyan.

In a release, he said that 1,400 tonnes of paddy were procured from farmers at the five procurement centres opened on January 24. The centres were at Kodumudi, Sivagiri, Avalpoondurai, Elumathur and Ammapet.

More centres would be opened if needed, the Collector said.

Tournament begins

TIRUCHENGODE: Youth should pay attention for developing the body, mind and spirit, as the three are linked, said T. Balakrishnan, Vice-Chancellor, Periyar University, at the inauguration of the South-West Zone Inter-University Handball Tournament For Women 2006-2007 at the Vivekanandha group of institutions here on Monday.

Mr. Balakrishnan advised the students to pay attention equally to all the three aspects, and in that regard emphasised the importance of such tournaments.

He asked the students to make full use of the opportunity and play in true sportsmanship.

Chairman and secretary of Vivekanandha Educational Institutions, M. Karunanithi, and M. Devatha, principal of Vivekanandha College of Arts and Sciences for Women participated.

Woman commits suicide

Tuticorin: A 38-year-old woman committed suicide at Velyuthapuram near here on Sunday, by hanging.

The police said that Mallika took the extreme step following chronic stomach ailment. The Sattankulam police are investigating.

15 arrested for gambling

Tuticorin: The police have arrested 15 persons from different parts of the district on Sunday, on the charge of gambling in public places.

Harim (50) and nine others were taken into custody from Arumuganeri, while Murugan (44) and four others were arrested from Kayamozhi.

They were remanded to judicial custody.

Two sentenced to life for murder

Tuticorin: The Principal District and Sessions Judge, Gokul Das, on Monday sentenced M. Raja (29) and P. Sudalaimani (30) to life imprisonment for murdering Kasi Raja (20) at Krishnarajapuram near here.

The accused had murdered Kasi Raja on July 4, 2005, owing to previous enmity.

Cheating case: Search on for three

Tuticorin: The police are on the look out for three persons who had allegedly duped G. Mokkandi (22) at Kovilpatti recently.

According to police sources, Subbiah, along with his wife and son, had borrowed Rs. 50,000 from Mokkandi offering him a lucrative job in a foreign country. Later, Mokkandi realised that the trio had cheated him and escaped with the cash.

Bank staff stage demonstration

Tuticorin: Indian Bank employees staged a demonstration here on Monday, in protest against a move to privatise it.

They urged the Government to drop the plan to sell 20 percent of the bank's shares worth Rs. 850 crore to private parties. As many as 51 persons took part in the demonstration.

Aavin sales outlet inaugurated

Nagercoil: The inauguration of an Aavin sales outlet on the Collectorate premises here has come as a boon to visitors as well as the employees, as they could get quality milk products at a nominal price.

Collector Sunil Paliwal, inaugurated the booth, on Monday.

The booth was constructed at a cost of Rs. 3.30 lakh and it will function from 5.00 a.m. to 7.00 p.m. every day.

It will sell milk sachet, hot milk, milk koah and Mysore pak.

17,328 to get free colour TV sets

PERAMBALUR: As many as 17,328 persons will get free colour television sets during the second phase of the implementation of the programme in the district on February 15. In a press release issued here on Monday, the Collector, Anil Meshram, said that one village had been identified in each of the five Assembly segments in the district. The television sets would be distributed to the beneficiaries of Keezhakarai, Arunagirimangalam, Koman, Nagampandal and Amanakkan Thondi villages. The Collector inspected the sets stocked at the Taluk Office here.

Two workers die of asphyxiation

KARAIKAL: Two workers, Raj (30) and Murugesan (28) of Vanjur in Karaikal district in the Union Territory of Puducherry, who were engaged in cleaning a septic tank in a private firm near Vanjur died of asphyxiation on Sunday. Three other workers who tried to rescue them also fell unconscious and were admitted to the Government hospital at Thirumalairayanpattinam near here.

School to reopen tomorrow

PUDUKOTTAI: The primary section of a private school, which was closed following the collapse of a part of a tiled stretch last month injuring about 30 children, will be reopened on Wednesday. A decision to this effect was taken at the end of a meeting held between parents and the school authorities.

The classes would be held at the high school section in its vicinity with full-fledged buildings.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level in the Mettur dam stood at 84.38 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Monday. The inflow was 243 cusecs and the discharge from the dam was 2,000 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

MLA dead

MADURAI: All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) Madurai West MLA, S.V. Shanmugam (60), died of a heart attack here on Monday.

Mr. Shanmugam was admitted to a private hospital after he complained of fever on Monday morning.

At around 9.30 p.m., he developed cardiac problems and was rushed to another private hospital. He was declared "brought dead", hospital sources said. The MLA was in the news recently after he created a flutter in party circles by praising Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin at a function in Madurai.

Amidst criticism within the party, he did not participate in the AIADMK general council meeting and often declared that he was "ready to face any action". — Staff Reporter
