CHENNAI: Bharatiya Janata Party's all-India secretary Su.Thirunnavukkarasar has alleged that the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Government is in no way better than the previous All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam regime. Corruption, he alleged, was widespread in all departments. He was ready to prove his charge against the Government and ready to face any enquiry. Addressing reporters here on Monday, Mr. Thirunnavukkarasar criticised the "increasing encounter deaths" in the State. Action against anti-social elements should be taken legally and the police should not take the law into their hands. He pointed out that the ruling party's ally Pattali Makkal Katchi also condemned the encounter deaths. The BJP leader demanded that the State Government should send an all-party delegation to Andhra Pradesh for ascertaining the actual position on the Palar river issue. While the AIADMK had charged that Andhra Pradesh had initiated reservoir construction work, the DMK had denied that any construction had taken place. Expressing the hope that the by-elections to Chennai Corporation would be free and fair, Mr. Thirunnavukkarasar said only then people would have faith in democracy. The ruling party should take the local body election results as an appraisal of its performance and not treat it as a prestige issue. Appealing to the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam to reconsider its decision to boycott the Corporation by-elections, he said by not participating the party was not exercising its democratic responsibility.
Price rise
Mr. Thirunnavukkarasar alleged that under the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre, prices of essential commodities had increased. He said the Centre was not firm in handling terrorist activities.
