Puducherry
Special Correspondent
Puducherry: Secretary of the Communist Party of India (CPI) here N. Kalainathan on Monday expressed his strong protest against the "delay" on the part of the Congress in finalising the list names of three nominated legislators for the Territorial Assembly. Addressing presspersons here on Monday, Mr. Kalainathan said that there was a firm commitment the Congress had made prior to the Assembly polls in May 2006 that the CPI, an alliance, would be earmarked one of the three nominated legislators. Nothing had happened all these months.
To review performance
As soon as the Congress Government came to power, with the support of the allies, a coordination committee should have been set up and this too had not been done so far. The committee would be of help to review its performance and implementation of various schemes. He wondered what prevented the Government from constituting it. He said that the CPI would conduct meetings on March 8 and 9 in Puducherry and Karaikal districts to focus the issues of public importance and to announce the next course of action. He said there was practically no hike in monthly pension paid to the freedom fighters or increase in the quantum of subsidy given to poor families to construct concrete structures, while advertisements of the departments were making tall claims. The secretary of the AITUC (a trade union affiliated to the CPI), V.S. Abishegam, was present. The CPI has a lone representative, R. Viswanathan, elected from Reddiarpalayam constituency in the Territorial Assembly.
