CHIKMAGALUR: Members of the District Arrack Vendors and Workers' Federation held a demonstration here on Monday to protest against the decision of the State Government to ban sale of arrack in the State.

They took out a procession from the taluk office in which a large number of women and children participated. Office-bearers of the federation addressed them at a meeting held on the premises of the Bolarameshwara temple.

They said the Government's decision would result in loss of livelihood to more than 10 lakh families in the State. Development works would also be adversely affected as the Government depended on the considerable revenue generated by the sale of arrack.

Pointing out that arrack consumers would switch to illicit liquor with disastrous consequences, they wanted the Government to provide alternative employment or adequate compensation to those who would be rendered jobless.

They presented a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner of Chikmagalur district.
