HYDERABAD: Tata Teleservices Ltd, the Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) telephony provider, here on Monday launched its USB Data Modem, said to be the smallest in the country and one that was compatible for use with both personal computers and laptops alike. After a soft launch, COO of TTSL (Andhra Pradesh) Sanjeev Khera said on one hand it offered superior mobility to people looking for Internet access while on the move, and on the other, it catered to those in rural and semi-urban areas where wireline Internet connectivity was either non-existent or not very reliable. Equipped with an internal antenna, it serves as a wireless network card, a modem and a mobile phone, allowing the user to connect to the net, make, receive voice calls and send/receive SMS without the need for a network cable or phone line. Mr. Khera said "market survey reveals that in 2005-06, the computer market added over 50 lakh machines, including about 4.5 lakh laptops, indicating a boom in computer usage that will also translate into higher Internet usage. Also, people are opting for multipurpose compact Internet devices, which offer superior mobility over the traditional phone line-based modems." Bundled with ME-425 offering and 512MB of data transfer and special offer of no rentals for the first two months, the modem is priced at Rs. 3,850. Customers can choose to migrate to any other tariff plan after two months.
