ALAPPUZHA: The State would construct 47.77 km of seawall and renovate 64 km of existing seawall with the funds provided by the 12th finance commission, Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan has said. Inaugurating the State-level function organised at Kakkazham near Ambalappuzha on Monday marking the beginning of seawall construction, Mr. Achuthanandan said the construction of seawall had become a synonym of corruption in the State and that the situation should change. He said it was often found that only less than half of the targeted construction could be completed in the stipulated time. The present construction works should not repeat such mistakes, he said. Water Resources Minister N.K. Premachandran said the 12th finance commission awarded Rs.175 crore to the State for seawall construction. The award was better than the 11th finance commission's but even that was not sufficient for construction of seawall along the State's coast, he said. He said the technology of geo-fabric filter system was being used at present in the construction of seawall. Minister for Cooperation and Devaswom G. Sudhakaran, who delivered the keynote address, said the attitude of officials was important in completing projects on time. Those who spoke included Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac and Fisheries Minister S. Sarma. MPs C.S. Sujata, K.S. Manoj, MLAs, A.M. Arif, B. Babuprasad and C.K. Sadasivan participated in the function.
