Direction issued on import of milk

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Food and Civil Supplies Minister, C.Divakaran, has directed the officials to take action including imports from neighbouring States to solve the shortage of milk. He gave the direction at an emergency meeting convened here on Monday to discuss the issue following reports that a minor shortage of Milma milk was being experienced in some parts of the State. The meeting was attended by the managing directors of the Milma and the top officials. The meeting was told that a shortage of milk was experienced always during the season and that factors connected with the climate were responsible for it. — Special Correspondent

KPCC meet to discuss agitation plan

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) has convened a joint meeting of its office-bearers and District Congress Committee presidents on Thursday. The meeting would be held at the party's State headquarters at 2 p.m., KPCC general secretary M.I. Shanavas said in a statement here on Monday. The UDF High Power Committee is also meeting here on Tuesday to discuss the next stage of its proposed agitation programme.

The DCC presidents would assume charge in the next few days. In Thiruvananthapuram, the new DCC president V.S. Sivakumar would assume office on Wednesday. The joint meeting would discuss the various agitation programmes the UDF is planning against the LDF Government' alleged misrule. — Special Correspondent

Currency `Thulabharam'

THRISSUR: A `thulabharam' was offered in Indian currency for a six-month-old child at the Guruvayur Sreekrishna Temple on Monday. A sum of Rs.9 lakhs (notes in the denomination of Rs.100) was offered for Ayush by his father Bhageerathan, a native of Tamil Nadu. A similar `thulabharam' was offered by a devotee at the temple previously in 1987. A sum of Rs.1.32 lakh (notes in the denomination of Rs.10) was offered then. `Thulabharam' is a ceremony in which offerings of the same weight of the devotee is presented to the deity. — Staff Reporter

Accused arrested

THRISSUR: Rupesh Valentine D'Mello, 22, of Vasai, Thane, an accused in several car theft cases, was arrested by the Maharashtra police on Sunday night from the Divine Retreat Centre at Chalakudy. Superintendent of Police T. Chandran said D'Mello was absconding and the Thane police acted on a tip-off and came to the State to arrest him. The police said D'Mello was staying at the Centre for a while, but did not specify when he had reached there. — Staff Reporter

Art exhibition

THRISSUR: The Kerala Lalithakala Akademi will hold an exhibition of paintings and drawings by Devan Madangarly at its gallery here from February 9 to 15, according to a press release. — Staff Reporter

Poets' meet held

THRISSUR: A poets' meet was held here on Monday as part of the national book festival organised by the Kerala Sahitya Akademi and District Library Council. Inaugurating the meet, Tamil poet Kutty Revathi said literary works should have social relevance. Konkani writer Nagesh Karmali was the guest of honour. — Staff Reporter
