Attempt made to demolish religious structure

Panipat: Anti-social elements damaged a religious structure at local Kila Maidan here before police arrived and prevented them from demolishing it entirely.

Police has been deployed at the site after the incident on Sunday and a peace committee has been formed to repair the damaged structure and coordinate between the communities here.

On getting the news of the incident, several people of the minority community assembled at Kila Maidan demanding strict action against those involved, police said on Monday.

They alleged the involvement of Nagar Parishad chairman Vinod Vadhera and activists of newly formed Punjab Sabha and raised slogans against them. Keeping in view the sensitivity of the situation, Sub Divisional Magistrate Shakti Singh also reached the spot and assured the assembled people that action will be taken against those involved. The leaders of minority community handed over a memorandum, addressed to the Chief Minister, to the SDM.

As a precautionary measure, the administration convened a meeting of the prominent representatives of both communities to discuss the situation and form a peace committee of their representatives. -- PTI
