Rebel BJP candidate withdraws from race

In favour of official BJP nominee

DEHRA DUN: Kuldip Kumar, a leader of Hindu Jagran Manch who was a BJP rebel candidate, withdrew his nomination for the Vikasnagar Assembly seat in Uttarkhand on Monday in favour of senior party leader Munna Singh Chauhan who is the official BJP nominee from the constituency.

"I withdrew my nomination from the seat," Mr. Kumar told reporters at the BJP headquarters in the presence of top state party leaders.

His statement came amid confusion that he was seeking election from Vikasnagar after Mr. Chauhan's wife Madhu filed her nomination from neighbouring Chakrata constituency as an independent candidate.

Mr. Kumar said he thought that Mr. Chauhan would canvass for his wife against the interest of BJP and so he had filed his nominations from Vikasnagar.

Mr. Chauhan also made it clear that he had nothing to do with the election of his wifeand so he would not canvass for her. - PTI
