Mahima Patel assumes charge

Bangalore: The Janata Dal (S) MLA Mahima Patel on Monday assumed charge as the Special Representative of the State Government in New Delhi to coordinate the development projects of the State with the Union Government. He took charge in the presence of Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, party legislators and workers.

Mr. Kumaraswamy and others congratulated Mr. Patel and wished him success in his new assignment. Mr. Patel has the rank of a Cabinet Minister. — Staff Reporter

Passports despatched

BANGALORE: Passports applications submitted under A series on January 8, B series submitted on January 5, C series submitted on December 22, E series submitted on January 25, K series submitted on January 24, M series submitted on December 19, N series submitted on January 16 and W series submitted on January 4 have been despatched. A press release said that in cases where police reports had not been received or there were objections, the files may be pending. Last date extended

BANGALORE: The last date for submission of applications for the post of constable in the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has been extended to February 20. Candidates can also forward their applications to the receiving centres through Speed Post, ordinary post, book post or registered post. Meeting held on RTI Act

BANGALORE: Union Minister of State for Planning M.V. Rajasekharan has said the Right to Information (RTI) Act is a powerful tool to combat corruption in the administration and empower citizens. He was speaking at a meeting organised by the Karnataka Small-scale Industries Association (KASSIA) here on Monday. He urged civil society groups to use the Act to expose high-level corruption.

KASSIA president R. Prithvi Raj was present. Y.G. Muralidharan, consumer activist, explained the salient features of the Act.

Principal's transfer sought

HASSAN: Students of the Government Women's Polytechnic here staged a dharna in front of their college in protest against the "rude" behaviour of their acting principal. The district unit of the Students' Federation of India led the students. In a representation, the students brought to the notice of the Minister for Higher Education and the Technical Education Director the "harassment" by the acting principal. No action had been taken to their earlier complaints, they said. The students said they would continue their dharna till the acting principal was transferred. — Staff Correspondent

Ambulance donated

Belgaum: Lok Sabha member Suresh Angadi has donated a high-tech Ambulance to the KLE Society's Heart Foundation here on Monday. A function was held to mark the inauguration of the ambulance. Quiz contest winners

MYSORE: More than 300 students took part in the Mysore city finals of "IQ," an inter-collegiate undergraduate quiz, held on Sunday. As many as three teams from colleges in Mysore and two teams from those in Mangalore took part in the quiz organised by IMS Learning Resources Private Limited. Nikhit, Kanu and Sumanth of the National Institute of Engineering who comprise the winning team will go on a free Mumbai-Goa cruise journey. Forum launched

GULBARGA: A new organisation called the Gulabrga University Degree College English Teachers Forum has been formed to enrich knowledge of teachers and students by holding workshops, seminars and conferences on English regularly.

A spokesperson of the forum said here on Monday that experts in English from different parts of the country and organisations like Centro de Investigaciones Educativas para la Formación Integral (CIEFI) would be invited to hold the workshops and seminars.

Debate competition

GULBARGA: Arunkumar of the Department of Economics and Maheshwari of the LVD College, Raichur have won the debate competition organised by the Gulbarga University for postgraduate and undergraduate students respectively.

Student Welfare Officer of the Univrsity Vijayakumar in a press release said Mallikarjun of the Department of Economics and Vishwanath Hadapad of the N.V. Degree College were adjudged second best in the contest. — Special Correspondent
